Chicks in the 5K Classroom
If you are interested in hatching, but do not want to commit caring for eggs in an incubator or the risk of illness due to handling live animals in your classroom, we have an alternative. You may request a Chick Life Cycle kit. Please see below.

How is hatching connected to the 2024 SC College and Career Ready Science Standards?
- K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
Like humans, chicks, even before hatching follow an expected pattern of growth and development. - K-ESS2-2 Construct an argument supported by evidence for how plants and animals (including humans) can change the environment to meet their needs.
Once the chicks hatch, have students observe using their notebooks, how the chicks change their home. They will move things around, knock things over, etc. - K-ESS3-1 Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants or animals (including humans) and the places they live.
What are the needs of the chicks before they hatch - humidity, warmth, turning, etc.
What are the needs of the chicks after they hatch - warmth, food, water, space, etc. - K-ESS3-3 Plan and carry out an investigation that gives evidence of human impact on the land, water, air, and/or other living things in the local environment.
Not sure if this is appropriate to associate with chicks and 5 year-olds. While humans care for chicks until they hatch and for a time after they hatch, we primarily use chickens as food. Chicken farming impacts the land and surrounding water and air.
Exciting Times!
During Q4, many of our 5 year-olds will have the experience of raising chicks in their kindergarten classroom. Our Science Refurbishment Center has incubators and egg turners available, at no cost. Some teachers obtain eggs, incubators and guidance from 4H. Teachers say this is a most integrated unit, perfect for the end of the school year as the weather warms toward summer. They incorporate writing, reading, research, counting skills, as well as making predictions, community awareness, and value for living things. At the end many teachers and students will take the chicks outside for a parade and others use the experience to bolster their celebration of Mother's Day!

A read-aloud that many of our teachers
highly recommend! |
This video is not narrated, but is set to music.
Teachers can pause and explain, as needed. |
This video is about a few things that should be done on or around Day 14 of your hatching journey.

Another great video to help prepare students for the experience of hatching eggs!
